➣ Research Project & Mission Statement: Coordination (studies)
Principally, I am a social philosopher engaged in conceptual engineering and macrostrategy within the wider Effective Altruism, AI alignment, Existential Risk (studies) and Progress (studies) space. In relation to this constellation, I represent a heterodox, interdisciplinary perspective emphasising the holistic alignment of civilisation.
Drawing on crucial considerations neglected in the current discourse, I take a humanities-first approach informed by the major frames of the megamachine, the metacrisis and metamodernism. Ultimately, my research project formulates a novel synthesis at the frontier of applied critical theory, systems theory and meta-theory — a neocybernetics advancing a 'theory of trajectory change' towards a 'viable world-system'.
To further this endeavour, I am currently working on guiding the formation of a new Coordination (studies) movement: a reconception of effective altruism for the age of AGI oriented towards solving human coordination and alignment problems.
➣ Abbreviated History of Academic Engagements: EA, AI & Beyond
-
Within EA, I founded and facilitated the EA Redteaming Fellowship at EA Oxford and was a mentor at the EA London Student Summit and EAGx Prague.
-
As an emerging researcher and advocate I have presented at the International Conference on Large-Scale AI Risk and the Forum of Solutions for Human-Compatible AI on the extended sociotechnical frame of civilisational superintelligence alignment.
-
During the PIBBSS Fellowship 2025, I was invited to participate in the Post-AGI Equilibria workshop on stabilising multi-polar dynamics between institutional and AI agents and later presented on this subject at the Principles of Intelligence summer symposium.
-
Additionally, I have had abstracts accepted to the Posthuman Studies Conference - applying 4E cognition to AI risk - the Philosophy in Technology Conference - critiquing the nasceant ontology of neomechanism (man as machine intelligence) – and the symposium AI Agents: Artificial, Angelic, or Adversarial Intelligence? (at the Joint Conference on the Philosophy of Computing and AI) applying the speculative method of critical alien phenomenology to surveillance capitalism as a Cartesian-Laplacean Demon.
-
Related to these themes - based in the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Essex - my undergraduate (now postgraduate) dissertation on the ideology of accelerationism critically explored framing the 'fearful symmetries' between advanced global capitalism and unaligned artificial superintelligence as complex adaptive systems.

Max Ramsahoye
Civilisation Alignment Researcher
Recursively oriented towards aligning human collective intelligence
Past Role: I was recently a research fellow at Life Itself and the Second Renaissance initiative during which I starting working on a sequence on Meta-theory - foundational research and conceptual engineering surrounding the metacrisis, metamodernism, metatheory and metaphysics, including 'What is the Metacrisis and What Should it Be', 'Maps and Mechanisms of the Metacrisis' and 'Metamodernism vs Neomodernism'.
Writings in-progress: Complementing my overarching research project Civilisational Mechanics, I am also writing a a tripartite collection, Fearful Symmetries a counter-blog at Disputes of Progress and sequence on Critical Effective Altruism.
Maps of the Metacrisis: Other projects of mine include Molochian, an intellectual history of the god of destructive competition, and Cybersynergetic a literature map of the civilisational superintelligence alignment problem - the latter undertaken during PIBBSS.
Academic Research: my philosophy (BA, now MA) dissertation (MAD), The Capital-AI: Capitalism as an Unaligned ASI models advanced global capitalism as a form of unaligned (cybernetic) artificial superintelligence that is developing unaligned (technical) artificial superintelligence. My capstone project Capital Phenomenology: What Is It Like to Be Capitalism? draws a further parallel to evolution, framing the market 'extended order’ as a distributed 'intelligent designer’ & 'emergent agency' across multiple subjects.
Designed Fellowships: I have also created a Redteaming EA Fellowship for the constructive criticism of the movement (which I ran at EA Oxford) and a Pragmatic Utopianism Fellowship presenting an extended and alternative conception of EA as doing systems and society better.
Involved Events: I have previously spoken at The International Conference on AI Risk on conceptual engineering and collective intelligence and designed the sessions of the Sensemaking Summer School on the metacrisis and metamodernism.
Former Experience: I have previously been a group organiser, community builder and Redteaming fellowship facilitator at Effective Altruism Oxford; an AI governance fellow of Impact Research Groups London, part of the winning research group on The Data of Gradual Disempowerment; and a summer research fellow of the Principles of Intelligent Behaviour in Biological and Social Systems initiative for San Francisco 2025 focused on collective intelligence and complex systems.
